A Spectacular & Joyful Declamations!
Weekly Family Bulletin!Ryan WassermanFri, 13 Mar 2026 21:03:01 +0000/communication/2csjq1cubtlpscoag52dkrxfdv3qew6000ee7dc3493938686c6005:623ccea2e148175a667476f3:69b1a3842173680aace8d3fc

It’s time once again for the Soundview Yearbook Cover Contest! See below for participation details and how your student(s) can submit their artwork.

Dear Soundview family,

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful week and are settling into the rhythm of daylight savings time. Hard to believe spring is just around the corner, especially when you start the day with snow. The pure joy on children’s faces this morning was absolutely the best way to start the day!

This week, our middle school students have been hard at work rehearsing for Declamations next Thursday. Declamations is a Soundview tradition that brings me joy and demonstrates so many of the things that I value in a Soundview education and the Soundview community. Declamations is a student-produced theater production that requires risk-taking, collaboration, and communication. The skits are often funny, sometimes serious, and always brave. And I tell nervous students they are about to perform for the friendliest audience ever, and I often share a story about a parent in the audience who quietly prompted a very nervous 8th grader with the lines for his monologue from Macbeth. Our community shows up for each other. I invite you all to join me for Declamations next week to celebrate our confident and talented middle school students!

Spring Benefit Registration Deadline
We also have important and exciting news! The registration deadline for the Spring Benefit has been extended through Monday, March 16. We hope you will join us for this special evening. This year’s theme, The Next Chapter Starts With Us, reminds us that the future of Soundview is something we write together, and we want our community in the room to help make that happen.

Still planning for summer? ł§´ÇłÜ˛Ô»ĺ±ąľ±±đ·É’s inquiry-based, adventure-filled Summer Camps are open for students entering Early Childhood–Kindergarten and Grades 6–8, and are led by our own faculty and staff. Camps are open to both Soundview families and the wider community, so feel free to invite friends. Space is limited, and we encourage you to register soon through our website.

One more thing…
On March 13, 1991, the documentary Paris Is Burning premiered in New York City, offering a powerful and intimate look into the underground ballroom scene of Harlem in the 1980s. Directed by Jennie Livingston, the film explored the lives of Black and Latino LGBTQ+ communities who created vibrant spaces of self-expression through drag, dance, fashion, and performance at a time when they faced widespread discrimination and marginalization.

The film holds lasting historical significance for bringing mainstream awareness to drag culture, chosen families, and the resilience of queer communities. Paris Is Burning introduced many viewers to the concept of “voguing,” the importance of ballroom houses, and the idea of identity as something that can be boldly created and celebrated. Its impact continues today, influencing art, fashion, and popular culture while honoring the voices and experiences of the people who built a culture rooted in pride, survival, and belonging. It’s been another fantastic week on campus, full of activity and capped off with an electric assembly!

Dear Soundview family,

I am proud to share that our Board of Trustees recently approved an updated Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. This is the culmination of a year of research and reflection by the Board, administration, and faculty to state what these words mean to 911±¬ÁĎÍř and why belonging is essential for each individual within our community to thrive. Through this work, we were reminded of the power of the IB Learner Profile traits to provide a roadmap for the skills and mindsets needed to ensure a strong culture of belonging at Soundview. Please visit our website to read ł§´ÇłÜ˛Ô»ĺ±ąľ±±đ·É’s Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.

Congrats to our Grade 1/2 Seals and Otters for a wonderful and successful assembly today! The Performing Arts Center was completely packed. Thank you to everyone for showing up to support our students. Today’s assembly highlighted Women’s History Month and the March International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile trait “Inquirer.” You can see photos from this event below.

One more thing…
On March 6, 1974, Helen Thomas was named White House bureau chief for United Press International (UPI), becoming the first woman to hold that position at a major wire service. A trailblazer in political journalism, Thomas had already built a respected career covering multiple presidential administrations, but this appointment marked a historic breakthrough in a field long dominated by men. At a time when women were still fighting for equal opportunity in newsrooms, Thomas’s promotion signaled a shift toward greater inclusion and visibility for women in political reporting. She became a prominent and persistent voice in the White House press corps, helping to open doors for future generations of women journalists and reshaping expectations about who could ask the toughest questions at the highest levels of government. .

One more thing…
On February 27, 1922, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld women’s voting rights in Leser v. Garnett, affirming the constitutionality of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Court unanimously rejected arguments that the amendment had been improperly ratified, firmly establishing its legal standing.

This decision was historically significant because it protected the hard-won gains of the women’s suffrage movement and ensured that women’s right to vote could not be undermined by state-level challenges. By reinforcing the amendment’s legitimacy, the ruling strengthened women’s full participation in American democracy and marked a pivotal step toward greater gender equality under the law.

Dear Soundview community,

We warmly invite you to join us for the Soundview Spring Benefit on Saturday, March 28, from 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm at the beautiful Edmonds Waterfront Center.

Your participation plays an essential role in helping us reach this year’s fundraising goals and ensuring we continue to provide an education rooted in ethics, rigor, and compassion for every Soundview student. While the evening is an important fundraiser, it is also a joyful celebration of our community and a meaningful opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of our children.

This year’s theme, “The Next Chapter Starts With Us,” reflects a pivotal moment for Soundview. It honors the strong foundation we have built together and calls on each of us to help shape what comes next. By supporting the Spring Benefit, you are investing in the programs, opportunities, and sense of belonging that define the Soundview experience, for today and for years to come. No matter how you choose to participate, there is a place for everyone in this next chapter.

We are also continuing to welcome event sponsors for those who wish to deepen their impact to help offset the cost of the event. Sponsorships help ensure that more of the funds raised directly benefit our students and programs. Your generosity helps us honor the extraordinary educators and students who make Soundview so special. Please reach out to Ryan Wasserman, Director of Advancement, to learn more.

Whether you plan to attend in person or support from afar, you can purchase tickets now or make a contribution today.

Dear Soundview family,

I hope you’re heading into the weekend feeling energized after another lively week at Soundview! The campus was buzzing with excitement from the Seahawks Super Bowl win and the much-anticipated break. I missed seeing many of you on campus for our originally scheduled Community Coffee and Assembly this morning. Due to the high number of illnesses this week and resulting loss of practice time, we rescheduled for Friday, February 27, same time and format. Our Grade 3/4 students will be rested, well-rehearsed, and ready to go!

Momentum is also building for the Soundview Spring Benefit on March 28 at the Edmonds Waterfront Center, and we truly hope to see you there. This evening is both a celebration of our community and a critical fundraiser that directly supports our students. Ticket sales, auction bids, raffle tickets, and paddle raises all play an important role in making this event a success, and it simply wouldn’t be the same without our families.

As we look ahead, planning for the 2026–2027 school year is underway. Major dates for next year will be shared after the mid-winter break, with the full academic calendar to be published this spring. For planning purposes, Dolphin Day will be on Tuesday, September 8, with the first day of school on Wednesday, September 9.

Head of School Search Update
As we mentioned last week, our Head Search Committee is making progress on our plan towards landing a permanent Head of School for Soundview. Part of the internal vetting process is an on-site visit day where the search consultant meets with faculty, staff, and families to gain insight on the internal candidate. Your perspective as parents and families is an important part of this process. This will be taking place on Tuesday, February 24, from 2:15 to 3:00 pm. An anonymized survey will be sent for those who are unable to attend or who have additional feedback to share. Please for the live session to help us plan.

To read more about our process, search committee, and timeline, visit the Head of School Search page on our website.

Preparation for NWAIS Accreditation continues to be a focus for our administrative team and Board of Trustees. Erin Armstrong is leading us through the writing of a self-study that requires us to reflect on our practices in all areas of the school. The next milestone will be the preliminary visit on Wednesday, May 6. The chairs of our visiting team, Julie Lennox from Missoula International School and Yvan Tabellion from French Immersion School of Washington, will visit Soundview to ensure we are ready to move forward with the accreditation process. We feel ready and are excited for their visit!

Many of you have asked recently about the next steps for naming a permanent head of school. Our Board of Trustees established a formal Head Search Committee to steward this process. Please read Board President Shawn Heidel’s update on the head search. Families are invited to campus on Tuesday, February 24, to meet with the search consultant from 2:15 to 3:00. A link to RSVP will be in Tuesday’s Toddle Announcements and next Friday’s letter. Please join us and get involved in the process.

If you’d like to deepen your involvement by hosting a table or sponsoring part of the event to help offset the cost, please contact our Director of Advancement, Ryan Wasserman.

The Community Project builds on the power of empathy and serves as the capstone service-learning project for students at Soundview. In the coming weeks, we’ll highlight students’ projects. Our Grade 5 students had a wonderful Move-Up Day, spending time with their future middle school teachers, asking thoughtful questions, and getting an exciting glimpse into what the middle school experience will be like at Soundview.

Dear Soundview families,

I am looking forward to seeing you tomorrow at our annual Chili Cook-Off & BINGO. After a month of unrest, uncertainty, and heightened emotions across our country and closer to home, I feel the need for connection with my community. Thank you to our incredible SPGA for hosting this much-needed opportunity to bring our community together for food and fun. The Chili Cook-Off and BINGO are almost here! RSVP below and join us a week from tomorrow for delicious food, fun, and meaningful connection.

Dear Soundview family,

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and found time to rest and recharge. For a short week, a lot was going on.

In response to increased ICE activity in Washington and closer to our campus, I attended a legal update with our NWAIS lawyer. We reviewed the current situation, and she provided updated guidance. Our admin team will be incorporating the new information into our existing on-campus protocols. As is always the case, the safety of your children and our faculty and staff is our highest priority. We will continue to keep you updated.

While students were away on Tuesday, our faculty was fully immersed in writing mid-year report cards, thoughtfully reflecting on each student’s growth and progress. Report cards will be shared with families on Toddle on Friday, February 6.

Our first Transition Preview was a success! Families whose students will be moving into a new classroom or division next year joined us for a sneak peek at what is coming. It was wonderful to see so many thoughtful questions and conversations as families met teachers, explored curriculum, and learned more about how Soundview supports confident and successful transitions. If you weren’t able to join us, please keep an eye out for information from the teaching team.

We wrapped up the week on Friday with our first afternoon concert of the year in the Performing Arts Center, featuring our Orchestra and Grades 7 and 8 bands. Our student musicians performed beautifully, showcasing their dedication, growth, and love of music. It was a joy to see the PAC filled with pride and applause.

Save the Date: Soundview Spring Benefit!Ryan WassermanThu, 15 Jan 2026 00:00:00 +0000/communication/v03hcs82crxdtrnsgmwzdpm12fbwsy6000ee7dc3493938686c6005:623ccea2e148175a667476f3:696693f613e1c62e56001ad9

Be sure to attend another unforgettable evening of fun and celebration at the Soundview Spring Benefit!

Dear Soundview families,

We are delighted to share that the Soundview Spring Benefit will return this spring to the beautiful Edmonds Waterfront Center. Please save the date for Saturday, March 28, and join us for an evening of connection, celebration, and meaningful support for our school.

The format will feel comfortably familiar, with a cocktail reception beginning at 5:30 pm, followed by dinner at 7:00 pm. The evening will feature a live auction, a paddle raise in support of Soundview, and a dessert dash to close out the night. Festivities will conclude around 8:45 pm. In the coming weeks, we’ll share additional details about auction highlights and registration so you can reserve your place.

The Spring Benefit is a cornerstone of our community calendar. It brings us together to celebrate what makes Soundview so special, which is our shared values, our dedicated educators, and the extraordinary experience we create for our students each day. Just as importantly, it is a vital fundraiser that directly supports the programs and opportunities that allow our school and children to thrive.

To make this evening possible, we are seeking sponsors who believe in ł§´ÇłÜ˛Ô»ĺ±ąľ±±đ·É’s mission and want to make a lasting impact. Ticket sales alone do not cover the full cost of the event, and sponsorships play a critical role in ensuring its success. Sponsors receive recognition and visibility prior to the event and throughout the evening, and most importantly, they help strengthen the Soundview community in a meaningful way. If you own a business or work for a company interested in community engagement, we would be honored to partner with you. Sponsorship opportunities include, but are not limited to:

If you or your company is interested in sponsoring any aspect of the Soundview Spring Benefit, please reach out to our Director of Advancement, Ryan Wasserman.

Thank you for being such an important part of our Soundview community. We are grateful for your continued support and look forward to sharing a memorable evening this spring!

Dear Soundview family,

As we come to the close of another meaningful year, it’s a wonderful moment to pause and reflect on all that ·É±đ’v±đ accomplished together. On behalf of the entire Soundview team, I wish you a joyful, restful, and connection-filled New Year with those you hold dear.

Our Annual Campaign’s matching challenge is in its final stretch, and there is still time to take part. Thanks to the generosity of a group of Soundview grandparents, along with alumni parents and trustees Alison and Doug Suttles, gifts made through December 31 will be matched dollar for dollar once we reach $15,000. To date, ·É±đ’v±đ raised $12,365 this month, and with your support, we can cross the finish line together.

Wishing our Soundview community a relaxing and refreshing winter break! See you in the New Year!

Dear Soundview families,

I hope you all had a wonderful week! It was a fun time on campus as many classes participated in winter parties or celebrations before the break. On Wednesday, our Grade 5 class traveled to the Washington State Capitol to expand their understanding of government and representation as part of their current unit of inquiry. We capped off our week yesterday morning as our Grade 6 class led the December all-school assembly, focusing on the December trait-of-the-month, “balanced,” featuring speeches from students, jokes, a skit, and a song from Mr. Fred. You can learn more about our IB Learner Profile , and view photos from the assembly and week of activities below.

Grade 5 had a very educational field trip this week to the Washington State Capitol!

During today’s faculty and staff in-service, our team focused on emergency preparedness by reviewing safety procedures, practicing protocols, and engaging in scenario-based drills. This ongoing training supports our commitment to maintaining a safe, well-prepared environment for all students and staff. We capped off the day with lunch and a white elephant exchange before heading into the break. And finally, a heartfelt THANK YOU to the SPGA and to all of the parents who so generously donated such thoughtful and meaningful holiday gifts for our faculty and staff. Receiving these gestures of appreciation just before winter break was incredibly heartwarming and deeply appreciated by all.

On December 19, 2012, Park Geun-hye made history by becoming the first woman elected President of South Korea. Her election marked a significant milestone in a country where politics had long been dominated by men, signaling a shift toward greater gender representation in leadership. While her presidency would later become complex and controversial, her election itself represented a breakthrough moment that reflected changing attitudes about women’s roles in public life and leadership in South Korea.
